RIO DE JANEIRO (Oct. 23)
Two youths were arrested here today on charges of desecrating the Jewish cemetery in Curitiba, the capital of the Province of Parana. The arrested youths, one 16 years old and the other 14, gave the police the names of three other youths they said were also involved in the desecration. The vandals broke the glass covers on photographs attached to more than a score of headstones in the cemetery.
Police said that the two youths said that “an unidentified person” urged them to perpetrate the vandalism. Police believe there is some connection between the desecration of the Curitiba cemetery and the presence in Parana of a number of Argentine Nazis, including the son of the late Adolf Eichmann, who was executed in Israel for his role in the annihilation of millions of European Jews. The Brazilian police are also investigating persistent reports that Josef Mengele, the notorious “selection doctor” who chose victims in the Auschwitz death camp, may also be hiding in Parana.
