Israel’s Government announced early today that the system of military government over certain border areas and other regions heavily populated by Israeli Arabs will definitely be abolished as of December 1.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol after a late-night meeting of the Cabinet. He had assured the Cabinet that the security of the state could be ensured without continuance of the military government. He said in his official announcement that the duties of the military governor system would be turned over to the relevant civilian authorities.
It was revealed, however, that about 250 Arab citizens of Israel, who are on a special “blacklist,” will still be under military rule, will have to reside in special areas, and will not be allowed to travel without special passes. The 250 are men who have either committed serious offenses against the security of the state, or are known for their extreme, pro-Arab nationalist views.
