Behor Shitreet, Israel’s Ex-minister of Police, Dies at Age of 72

Funeral services will be held here tomorrow for Behor Shitreet, Israel’s first Minister of Police, who died of a heart attack yesterday, Mr. Shitreet, who was 72, stepped down from his Government post four months ago, after serving uninterruptedly in all governments since the rebirth of Israel in 1948.

Born in Tiberias, of a Moroccan family, Mr. Shitreet began his career as a police inspector in his native city. He rose to assistant superintendent under the British regime, the highest rank a Palestine native could then attain. In 1935, he became a magistrate, and rose to chief magistrate when the British mandate over Palestine ended in 1948.
