The prospect of two Jewish candidates contesting for a U.S. Senate seat next year in New York was dimmed today when the State Department issued a statement asserting that Arthur J. Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, would not run for the Senate.

In response to published reports that leading Democrats expect Mr. Goldberg to run against Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, the State Department issued a statement by Mr. Goldberg asserting that “I am not a candidate” for the Senate from New York.
