Five Yiddish Writers Awarded Annual Prizes by Congress for Jewish Culture

Five prominent Yiddish writers were named as winners today of the annual prizes in Yiddish literature given by the Congress for Jewish Culture. Three of the prizes, named in memory of Lonia and Fischel Bimko, were endowed by the estate of the late Mr. Bimko, the late Yiddish playwright and author.

Winner of the Bimko prizes are: Hertz Bergner, of Melbourne, Australia, who received $300 for a book of short stories; Freed Weininger, of Buffalo, who also received $300 for a book of poems; and Benjamin Shlevin, of Paris, who received $100 for a short story. The two other prizewinners, who were awarded $200 each, were Moshe Gurin, of Tel Aviv, for a book of poems; and Israel Emiot of Rochester, for a book of poems.
