Trading was brisk today in all Israel-occupied Arab areas after the introduction of the Israeli pound as legal tender. Some attempts at boycotting of Israeli-made products were still being reported in the Nablus section of the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli pound is now the only legal tender in the Gaza Strip and in the Golan Heights in Syria. In the West Bank both the pound and the Jordanian dinar are legal tender. Most West Bank shops now carry Israeli-made consumer goods, particularly groceries and soft drinks. A few still have stocks of foreign-made merchandise but these are mainly such durables as furniture and mechanical toys.
Meanwhile refugee traffic in both directions across the Jordan River was reported here today as increasing, partly because some refugees are going into Jordan to visit relatives and others are going there to cash checks which cannot be cashed in the West Bank area because banks have been closed in the section. The arrangement of transit across the river has become a routine operation handled by professionals who charge a fee for acting as guides.
