NEW YORK (Aug. 28)
More than 150,000 listeners attended the 21 concerts given by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra throughout the United States and Canada during the past month, it was reported today. The final concert was performed at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., under the baton of Eugene Ormandy, with pianist Rudolph Serkin as soloist.
The concerts, under the patronage of Israel’s Prime Minister Abba Eban, were played for the benefit of the Israel Emergency Fund of the United Jewish Appeal. To undertake the tour, the orchestra gave up its summer vacation, and all the conductors and soloists who participated donated their services.
