Formation of the Atlanta Jewish Welfare Federation as the central agency of the Atlanta Jewish community, was announced today. The new federation merges the Jewish Welfare Fund and the Jewish Social Service Federation.
The merger was in line with recommendations made in a study begun in 1965 by a structure committee representing the three agencies to determine the kind of organization that would most effectively meet the needs of the Atlanta Jewish community. The charter of the new federation says it is to be “operated exclusively for religious, charitable and educational purposes” and is to do whatever is necessary to continue the work, program and purposes of the three agencies merged into it.
The boards of the three agencies unanimously approved the merger and named an interim board of directors. Abe Goldstein, president of the Jewish Welfare Fund, was named as interim president of the federation and M.C. Gettinger, executive director of the three merged agencies, was designated its executive director and secretary.
