Israel accused Jordan today of encouraging incidents against Israel “perpetrated by persons coming from Jordan.” In a letter to this month’s President of the Security Council, M. B. Kante, of Mali, Ambassador Gideon Rafael listed eight incidents which took place between October 24 and yesterday.
“These incidents indicate beyond doubt that the Government of Jordan is going further and is giving active support and succor to armed marauders using its territory as their base of operations,” Mr. Rafael said. “The Government of Israel views with grave concern the continuation of the encouragement and assistance given by the Jordanian authorities to the perpetrators of these armed attacks. This is a flagrant violation of the obligations Jordan has undertaken by accepting cease-fire resolutions.” Mr. Rafael reiterated, in the letter, the policy of Israel “to observe the cease-fire resolutions on the basis of complete reciprocity.”
In describing yesterday’s incident, Mr. Rafael charged that Jordanian military forces deployed along the east bank of the River Jordan and gave covering fire to their retreating marauders.” He also accused the Jordanians of shelling which resulted in the wounding of one Israeli, and in severe damage to the cultural center and the infirmary of the village of Maoz Chayim.
Mr. Rafael did not ask for a Security Council meeting. He requested only that his letter be distributed to all Security Council members.
