Klutznick, at Hebrew University, Calls for Continuance of Jewish Unity

A distinguished audience representing some of the leading Jewish service and cultural organizations of Europe and the western hemisphere heard a call here today for Israelis and outside Israel Jewry to strive to strengthen and preserve the “spirit of oneness” that prevailed during the trying period of crisis last May and June, when Israel faced a threat to her existence.

The speaker was Philip M. Klutznick, former international president of B’nai B’rith and U.S. delegate to the United Nations. He addressed the opening of the second annual meeting of the Hebrew University’s Institute of Contemporary Jewry, a body which he helped found a year ago in London. Among the organizations represented were the American Jewish Committee, the Jewish Publication Society of America, Fonds Social Juif Unifie of France, the Institute of Jewish Affairs of Britain, the American Jewish Historical Society, B’nai B’rith, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Federation de Communidades Israelitas of Argentina.

The meeting, held on the Hebrew University’s new campus, was attended by President Zalman Shazar of Israel. President Eliahu Elat of the Hebrew University greeted the assemblage, which included scholars and community leaders from four continents. Prof. Moshe Davis, head of the Institute of Contemporary Jewry, reported on its research program of the past year, which includes 19 projects and 17 publications in preparation. The meeting will continue tomorrow, after which the participants will go on a two day tour of the country.
