A former Nazi minister in Sofia, on trial for his role in the deportation of 1143 Bulgarian Jews to extermination camps in 1943, denied that he had participated in the crime. Heinz Beckerle, 65, insisted that he had cooperated with Bulgarian King Boris III to prevent the deportation. In his defense, Becker charged in court today that the prosecutor was subjecting him to “Dreyfus-type” persecution.
