An American Zionist leader today termed the Middle East resolution adopted by the U.N. Security Council last week “a weak resolution” but one which “at least leaves the way open” to peace, and which was “a clear rejection of the Russian-Arab demand for an unconditional withdrawal of Israeli forces.”
This assessment of the resolution was made by Dr. Emanuel Neumann, member of the Jewish Agency Executive and honorary president of the Zionist Organization of America, at a gathering in honor of Prof. Enrique R. Fabregat, former Uruguayan representative at the United Nations, who played a leading role in formulating the Palestine partition resolution which was adopted by the U.N. 20 years ago and paved the way for the establishment of the State of Israel.
The tribute to Dr. Fabregat, sponsored by the Herzl Institute, was also addressed by Ambassador Joel Barromi, alternate representative of Israel at the United Nations, and Dr. Joseph B. Schechtman, member of the Jewish Agency Executive. Messages were received from Ambassador Avraham Harman, Israel’s envoy to the United States and Ambassador Gideon Rafael, permanent representative of Israel at the United Nations. Ambassador Rafael noted that a street in Tel Aviv is named after Dr. Fabregat, and called the Uruguayan diplomat “a founding father of Israel.”
