Prof. Georgio Levi Della Vida, Scholar, Anti-fascist, Dies in Rome at 81

Prof. Georgio Levi della Vida, an internationally famous scholar and authority on Hebrew, Semitic and Islamic studies, died here at the age of 81. He was eulogized by President Giuseppe Saragat for his academic achievements and his opposition to the Fascist regime. Dr. della Vida was one of 12 distinguished professors who refused to take an oath of loyalty to the Fascist government in 1930, and preferred exile to life in a Fascist country. During his period of exile, he taught at the University of Pennsylvania. At the time of his death, he was professor emeritus at Rome University, the Accademia dei Lincei, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and at other Italian and foreign institutions.
