Franjo Cardinal Seper, the newly designated perfect of the Holy Congregation for Doctrine and Faith, a key post in the Vatican Curia, is known as one of the staunchest supporters of the declaration repudiating the charge of genocide against Jews in the crucifixion of Jesus which was adopted at the Second Vatican Council in 1965.
In a notable intervention in the debate on the document, in September 1964, Cardinal Seper asked “how can the Church not show interest in the old and new persecutions against an innocent people in such an atrocious manner? If we have been silent so far, now is the time to speak.”
The Cardinal has visited Israel privately several times and has never failed to call on his many friends among Jewish settlers from Yugoslavia.
