A busload of school children hit a mine on a Negev road today. One child and an adult were killed and 25 children were injured, some of them seriously, it was reported tonight. The injured were rushed by transport planes to hospitals in the Tel Aviv area. The bus was one of three carrying pupils of the Herzliah Gymnasium in Tel Aviv on their annual sight-seeing tour. The names of the dead were withheld pending notification of their families. The adult was described as a physician.
The bus, bound for Eilat struck the mine near Beer Orah, less than 20 miles north of its destination. Beer Orah was the scene of four other mine incidents in the last 24 hours, in one of which an Army half track was damaged. In both incidents, footprints were found in the vicinity leading to the Jordanian border.
Two Israeli soldiers died of wounds received in a clash with Arab marauders along the West Bank of the Jordan in the Beisan Valley last night, a military spokesman reported today. One of the Arabs was killed. The clash occurred when an Israeli patrol intercepted a band of saboteurs. The soldiers were wounded in the exchange as the Arabs retreated under covering fire from Jordanian guns across the demarcation line. They died in the hospital. The body of one of the saboteurs was found at the scene of the clash after Israeli guns silenced the Jordanian fire.
