Secretary-general Confers with Israeli, Egyptian Envoys on Mideast Missions

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

Secretary General U Thant met here today in separate conferences with Ambassador Yosef Tekoah of Israel and Ambassador Muhammed El-Kony of Egypt, and reportedly discussed with them the plan he announced three weeks ago to send a special emissary to the Middle East to investigate the situation of the civilian populations in Egypt, Syria and Israel.

The Secretary General had asked for the meetings, a rare step since usually conferences of this type are held at the request of the respective ambassadors. A spokesman for Mr. Thant had said earlier that the talks would involve “the question of the Middle East in general.” It was understood also that the Secretary General also raised the subject of the steps being taken toward possible Middle East peace by his special representative, Dr. Gunnar Jarring. It was indicated that Dr. Jarring would be coming to the United Nations headquarters while the current General Assembly session was underway, and may arrive here the middle of next week.
