Premier Levi Eshkol’s United Labor Party appealed today to social democratic parties throughout the world and to the Socialist International to help bring pressure to bear on the Polish regime to halt its current anti-Jewish campaign that “identifies it with the worst forces of reaction and isolates it from decent society.” The appeal was contained in a letter from Mrs. Golda Meir, general secretary of the party. It was written on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising observed in Israel today.
Mrs. Meir, former Foreign Minister of Israel, declared in her letter that “the unbridled violence of the anti-Jewish and anti-Israel policy which was initiated by the Polish Government Immediately following the Six Day War last June assumes more ominous forms of hatred and violence every day. It is shocking beyond comprehension,” she said, that a revival of anti-Semitism should have been initiated by a government of Poland, where three million Jews had been slaughtered,” there remains in Poland some 20,000 Jewish survivors of the holocaust, a considerable number of them invalid and infirm and they are the prime target of the unleashed hatred and all its consequences,” she asserted.
Mrs. Meir said that “the present policy of the rulers of Poland must meet with the strongest condemnation on the part of world public opinion. It must be made clear to the Polish Government what is the extent of its responsibility for helping to revive, by its hideous example, the spectre of anti-Semitism in Europe and other regions.”
