The New York Jewish Community Relations Council called today on the Jewish community of the New York area to seek to “eliminate every vestige of racism” in the Jewish community and to work for implementation of the Kerner report on civil disorders. The appeals were made in resolutions adopted at an all-day conference of the JCRC, comprised of 14 local units of major Jewish organizations.
Arthur J. Levine, president, asked New York Jewry “to support every responsible action that has as its aim the integration of the Negro into the mainstream of society.” Albert Vorspan, director of the commission on social action of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, said there was a need to “re-educate” the Jewish community because Jews were “backlashing as other white Americans are backlashing.”
Mrs. Dorothy Jones of the Protestant Council told the 100 Jewish communal leaders that anti-Semitism “is on the rise” in the Negro community and that Negroes were “disappointed” because Jews had “hedged” on issues involving minority group needs in various city boroughs.
