Prime Minister Pierre E. Trudeau has pledged his support for the enactment of a Federal group libel law to eliminate the spread of racial and religious hate propaganda, the Winnipeg Tribune declared today. Mr. Trudeau, who had supported such legislation as Minister of Justice in the Pearson administration, said the Government planned to “make it a crime” for any group to “slander a person or group” with literature just as it is a crime for an individual to slander another person verbally. The proposed measure has aroused considerable controversy in Canada and was subject of major debate at the recent plenary session of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
