A record crowd attending a special gift dinner pledged all-time high gifts of $2.1 million toward the Jewish Welfare Fund 1969 campaign and heard former Vice President Hubert Humphrey declare that “Israel means democracy” ad that “you must let that country know you stand behind it.” The 240 community leaders also pledged a similar amount to the third Israel Emergency Fund campaign. Mr. Humphrey said that Israel must have secure boundaries, free navigation rights on all international waterway, including the Suez Canal, security in its defense with modern weapons and modern aircraft, freedom from terrorism and the right to live as a nation.
