Formal Four Powers talks on the Middle East are expected to begin soon–possibly next week–informed Western diplomatic sources said here today. A principal topic of the meetings, they said, would be a possible new UN peace force. Another would be a joint United States, Soviet Union, British and French guarantee of a peace settlement. Bilateral consultations among the major powers have proceeded far enough in reconciling differing interpretations of the Security Council’s Nov. 22, 1967 resolution to justify full dress talks, the sources said.
(In other Mideast developments, United Nations Mideast peace envoy Dr. Gunnar V. Jarring scheduled a one-day visit in Beirut tomorrow to confer with Lebanese officials. Until now he has not carried on major discussions with them, it was believed. Cairo Radio announced that Maj. Gen. Ahmed Ismail Ali had been named the successor of Gen. Abdel Moneim Riad, the Egyptian Chief of Staff killed Sunday during a Suez Canal artillery exchange. Maj. Gen. Ali fought in the 1948 Arab-Israel War, and in 1957 visited the Soviet Union as part of an Egyptian delegation.)
