Massachusetts Board Over-rules Boston School Committee: No Saturday Classes

Download PDF for this date

Amid fears that Jewish public school children would have to attend classes on Saturdays to make up school days lost during the semester, the Massachusetts Board of Education informed the Boston Jewish Community Council that Saturday classes are not planned. The Boston School Committee had previously voted to conduct classes Saturday, May 31, to make up time lost during severe winter storms.

Massachusetts requires a minimum of 180 school days. However, storms caused so much loss of time that the educational system has four days to make up. The Boston board reported to the Council that the State board has waived the make-up requirement for elementary school children. Re-scheduling of classes for junior high school and high school students will be discussed at a meeting tomorrow.
