LONDON (May. 26)
Abubakr Awadallah, who took over the Premiership of the Sudan in a coup Sunday, said that his regime would promote closer relations with Egypt and “other progressive Arab states,” it was reported here. The leftist coup replaced the coalition Government of Ismail el-Azhari and was led by several middle-ranking military officers. Col. Jaafar Mohamed el-Nemairy, who proclaimed himself Defense Minister, was quoted as saying the Sudan would build stronger ties with Arab states in the “struggle for Palestine” and the fight against “Zionist infiltration.” Sudan is a member of the Arab League and had a nominal amount of troops stationed along the Suez Canal. Former Premier el-Azhari had reportedly purchased military equipment from the Soviet Union.
