Premier Golda Meir said today that Israel faced “serious and difficult” discussions with the United States over the future of the Middle East but cautioned that one should distinguish between differences that must be ironed out between friends and the differences with Israel’s enemies who refuse any form of discussion.
Mrs. Meir spoke at a press luncheon marking the dedication of Beit Agron, the new journalists’ center here. It is named in memory of the late Gershon Agron, the American-born former Mayor of Jerusalem who founded the Palestine Post in the early 1930s, today known as the Jerusalem Post, Israel’s only English-language daily.
The Premier said she saw no lag in support of Israel on the part of world Jewry despite the prominence given to the views of some Jews who criticize Israel’s policies. She thought the latter were outside the “mainstream of Jewish thought” and said their opinions have not affected such bodies as the World Jewish Congress, the Conference of Jewish Organizations (Cojo) or the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
