A New York Congressman warned yesterday that it was important to keep the spotlight of world opinion focused on anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union which, he thought, “may well be intensifying.” Rep. Jonathon Bingham, a Democrat, spoke at the triennial convention of the Free Sons of Israel, a fraternal order now marking its 120th anniversary.
He said there was “clear evidence that the Soviets do not ignore public criticism of their policies, especially in the United Nations.” He said that the Russians and the Arab bloc recently waged a campaign to take away the non-governmental organization status of the Coordinating Board of Jewish Agencies on the UN Economic and Social Council because it “has done an excellent job of researching and bringing to light Soviet violations of the UN Declaration on Human Rights, particularly where Jews are concerned.” B’nai B’rith is a Coordinating Board member.
