Dr. Amos de Shalit, a former head of the nuclear physics department at the Weizmann Institute of Sciences in Rehovoth, died here today at the age of 46 after a brief illness.
Prof, de Shalit was born in Jerusalem and was educated at the Hebrew University and in Zurich. He engaged in research at Princeton University in 1952, was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961 and scientific director at the Weizmann Institute from 1961-63. He headed the Institute’s nuclear physics department from 1954-64. He was a winner of the Israel Prize in 1965.
(In New York, Meir W. Weisgal, president of the Institute, called Prof, de Shalit’s death “an irreparable loss” to the Institute and to the State of Israel. Before leaving to attend the funeral services to be held Thursday in Rehovot, Mr. Weisgal described Prof, de Shalit as “a scientist of the highest distinction whose talents encompassed many fields.)
