The West German Central Jewish Council warned today of new threats to democracy in the country. The Council, which represents the relatively small organized Jewish community in the West German Republic, voiced concern with the growth of extremism at home. A statement issued in Dusseldorf said: “The Jewish community in this country, which has once before fallen victim to disastrous developments, feels obliged and within its rights to raise its voice in warning along with other democratic forces.”
The Parliamentary leader of the Social Democratic Party. Helmut Schmidt, said in Hamburg that if his party won in the national elections, it would take steps to outlaw the extreme right-wing, neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD).
