Israel Air Force jets attacked Egyptian positions along the Suez Canal and struck at Arab guerrilla bases near Salt in Jordan today. A military spokesman said all aircraft returned safely to their bases.
Israeli officials disputed Egyptian claims that its aircraft today successfully raided Israeli military positions in the northern Sinai, about 60 miles from the Suez Canal. According to Cairo, its jets struck at Israeli fortifications and “left them in flames.” An Israeli military spokesman said that low-flying Egyptian planes came in over the sea in an “attempted” attack on the para-military settlement of Nahal Yam on the northern Sinai coast. He said they fled within minutes after dropping bombs that missed their targets. He said there were no casualties or damage. The attack was the first Egyptian air strike against Israel-held territory since Oct. 6.
A military spokesman said Egyptian artillery staged a heavy barrage across the Suez Canal at about midnight last night. He said Israeli guns returned the fire and artillery duels developed in several sectors along the southern reaches of the waterway. No Israeli casualties were reported.
The American entertainer, Danny Kaye, arrived in Israel on an unscheduled visit last night and within hours was entertaining troops in the Suez Canal zone. Mr. Kaye requested permission to visit the Canal after learning that an Israeli entertainer was fatally wounded there two days ago.
