Egyptian commandos crossed the Suez Canal and ambushed an Israeli armored patrol this morning under cover of an Egyptian mortar attack. Israeli Air Force jets attacked the Egyptian mortar positions in the afternoon.

All planes returned safely to their bases. An Israeli military spokesman said two Israeli soldiers were killed in the ambush, two were wounded and one is missing. The attack occurred at about 8 a.m. local time. Two other Israeli solders were killed by Egyptian fire along the canal yesterday, one in the northern sector near Kantara and the other near the southern end of the waterway.
