An editorial in today’s issue of The Christian Science Monitor expressed the view that “on the whole, the recent evolution of American official policy towards the Middle East has been sound.” The editorial noted the government policy aims at supporting neither side, but, “rather, of seeking justice for all in a most difficult situation.”
The editorial, a response to an unnamed nationally leading syndicated newspaper column, stated, that leaving aside for the moment America’s interest in the Middle East, “it is impossible to see how any worthwhile, self-respecting American policy could do other than benefit both sides impartially. Certainly, no lasting peace can come from any other policy.”
According to the Monitor’s editorial, the syndicated column reported that a carefully planned political campaign was under way to reverse the administration’s Middle East policy into a middle-of-the-road position applying even-handedness towards both Israel and the Arab nations. The campaign’s objective, the Monitor editorial stated, “is to persuade the United States ‘to revert to 100 percent backing for Israel against the Arabs.”
