Israeli Ambassador Walter Eytan has returned to Jerusalem to consult with the Foreign Ministry on French “feelers” for improving Franco-Israeli relations “in all fields” and on an Israeli decision whether to accept reimbursement of its $50,000,000 instead of pressing for the 50 French Mirage jets it had bought. France has maintained an embargo on the planes’ delivery to Israel, despite pre-payment, while selling 125 jets to Libya. (In Jerusalem it was reported that Israel has again refused a request from the French government that it accept a refund of the money deposited for the jet fighter planes. Foreign Minister Abba Eban, at a meeting last week with French Ambassador Francis Hure, renewed Israel’s request for delivery of the planes but diplomatic sources were not optimistic about the prospect.
