TEL AVIV (Jun. 16)
Israel Air Force jets continued to attack Egyptian positions in the Suez Canal zone intermittently throughout the day. Their targets were mortars, artillery emplacements, bunkers and fortified positions, a military spokesman said. Today’s attacks followed up yesterday’s air raids that continued into the night. A military spokesman reported that all planes returned safely from all missions. Several Egyptian jets attempted to attack Israeli positions in the northern sector of the canal zone today but were driven off by anti-aircraft fire. One plane was hit and caught fire. There were no Israeli casualties. Guerrillas from Jordan fired mortar shells at Israeli positions in the Beisan area last night. An Israeli border patrol near Ashdod Yaacov was a target of small arms fire this morning. A military spokesman said the shooting last night and this morning was the first from Jordanian territory since last week’s battles between Jordanian troops and Palestinian guerrillas.
