Nasser Reported Favoring Peace with Israel As Step Toward Reorganizing Egypt’s Economy

President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt told a secret meeting of the Executive Committee of the Egyptian Arab Socialist Union, the country’s only political party, that peace with Israel was “not just a tactical move but a major strategic aim which would enable Egypt to reorganize her economy,” the daily newspaper Le Monde said today. in a report from its special Cairo correspondent Eric Rouleau. Pres. Nasser was also quoted as having told the secret meeting that last spring in Paris, an Egyptian envoy had established “contacts” with Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress. In its story Le Monde said, “All Egypt, popular masses and ruling circles alike, are in favor of the peace settlement and eagerly await it.”
