Teachers Resume Classes for Eighth, Twelfth Graders; Mail Drivers End Strike

The strike of high school teachers which began 17 days ago ended today–but only for eighth and 12th graders. The teachers agreed to resume classes for a two week period in order to prepare those grades for examinations they must take early next year. Negotiations on the teachers’ wage demands will continue during the two weeks. Education authorities hope the strike will be settled by then permitting the bulk of the 150,000 students in grades nine through eleven to return to their classes. The teachers union said the total strike would be resumed if negotiations fail to produce a settlement. Striking mail truck drivers went back to work today. Post Office authorities said it would take several days before the back-log cause by the strike is disposed of and deliveries return to normal.
