Sen. Jacob K. Javits said today that he thought the achievement of a Middle East peace settlement would “take some time” and expressed the hope that the United States “doesn’t get impatient and really twist Israel’s arm.” The New York Republican appeared on the CBS Radio Network program “Capital Cloakroom.” He said peace negotiations between Israel and Egypt should be “face-to-face.” Javits said that he saw “some movement” toward a Mideast settlement was “not too optimistic for the near term.” He said “I think this will take some time because I don’t think Israel can give up everything that they’re being asked to give up for a paper agreement. They have been too badly bruised.”
