The Presbytery of Cleveland, in a “Statement of Conscience” has called upon Russia to “eradicate every vestige of anti-Semitism” and to permit Jews who desire to leave to emigrate. The statement, involving 70 churches in the Greater Cleveland-Akron area, said the Presbytery is “profoundly disturbed by the discriminatory treatment of Jews in the Soviet Union and the suppression of their rights to practice their cultural and religious heritage.” According to Rev. Robert Hare, chairman of committee on Church and Society, “So long as this principle is violated, we cannot in good conscience remain silent.”
