Jewish Calendar Published in Rumania; Contains Survey of Jewish Laws, Customs

The Jewish calendar for 1971-72 has just been published in Rumania by the Federation of Jewish Communities. The calendar includes a translation into Yiddish of Article 31 of the Rumanian Constitution which states that every citizen is entitled to decide for himself whether he wants to be an atheist or practice one of the religions. Those choosing the latter are guaranteed complete freedom to exercise their faith. In addition to routine calendar material, the booklet also contains a survey of Jewish laws and customs and the texts of a number of prayers including the memorial prayer. Also included, in addition to the Jewish holidays, are the dates of Rumania’s liberation from the Nazis which are listed as holidays for Rumanian Jews. The current issue of the Journal of the Rumanian Jewish Community publishes the Hebrew translation of a Yiddish poem by the late Itzik Manger who was a Rumanian Jew.
