JERUSALEM (Dec. 15)
The Cabinet met in special session today to hear a report by Premier Golda Meir on her recent talks with President Nixon and other American officials. The content of Mrs. Meir’s report was not released. It was assumed that the Premier informed the Cabinet that the US renewed and clarified its undertaking to keep the balance of arms in the Middle East from tipping against Israel and not to support any attempt to impose a solution on either party in the Arab-Israel conflict.
The US is believed to have insisted, however, that further efforts be made to reach a settlement which would entail a softening of the positions of both sides. The US apparently believes that following the “treason” trial of former Vice President Ali Sabry and other Egyptian leaders involved in an attempted coup against President Anwar Sadat last year. Sadat may be more amenable to a political settlement.
