The State Department declined to comment today on the speech yesterday of Egyptian President Anwar S: lat to a joint session of the Egyptian parliament and the Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union in Cairo yesterday. Department spokesman Charles Bray observed that Sadat spoke at a “secret session” and said, “All we have is an unofficial account.”
Observers here believe that the cease-fire will remain in effect for the time being but that a wary eye should be kept on the possibility of renewed shooting along the Suez Canal in view of the lack of explicit statements from Cairo that Egypt will actually engage in continued negotiations either for an interim Suez agreement with Israel or an overall settlement under the aegis of United Nations mediator Gunnar V. Jarring.
