A police bomb disposal expert was seriously injured this morning while trying to dismantle a booby-trapped parcel presumably mailed by Arab terrorists abroad. The parcel was addressed to an address in the Tel Aviv area. The victim’s name was not disclosed. He reportedly lost his eyesight and underwent surgery. His condition was reported serious but not grave.
An undisclosed number of bomb-parcels have arrived in Israel during the past few days, One was found yesterday in the Kiryah post office in Tel Aviv and others reportedly have turned up at the post offices in Jerusalem and Eilat. Except for today’s incident, all were safely dismantled. Israeli police have approached Interpol, the international police organization, and have alerted the public to be wary of suspicious looking parcels.
The parcels appear to have been sent from Vienna. They resemble books or a box of chocolates and are usually wrapped in colorful paper, tied with colored ribbons and addressed in green ink on a white label, police said. The addresses were not disclosed but special warnings have been issued to security officers at large public institutions. All malls are being inspected for bomb parcels.
