An 80-year-old former Swiss police officer who lost his Job for an act of mercy that saved 3,000 Austrian Jews from deportation and probable death at the hands of the Nasie during World War II, was honored by President Gustav Heinemann of the West German Federal Republic, President Heinemann disclosed today that he had written a letter to Paul Gruniger in recognition of his courage and sent him a television set as a gesture of appreciation. Gruniger was fired when, contrary to the instructions of the Swiss government, he admitted some 3,000 fleeing Austrian Jews into Switzerland. He was rehabilitated 33 years later.
