An unidentified former SS officer has offered to turn the notorious death camp doctor, A. Mengele, over to Israeli authorities for $50,000, It was reported here today. The offer was said to have been made to Tuvia Friedman of Haifa, who heads the Nazi documentation and war research center in Israel. Mengele, the physician who selected Jewish prisoners for the Auschwitz gas chambers, has been at large since the end of World War II and is reportedly hiding in South America.
The Frankfurt Attorney General’s office has a standing offer of $15,000 to anyone who can provide information on Mengele’s precise whereabouts. The SS man reportedly told Friedman that Mengele was in Paraguay and that he knew his hideout. He submitted a photograph of the wanted war criminal that he claimed to have taken himself in South America recently. He said that with a sufficiently strong task force he could capture Mengele and deliver him to Israeli authorities.
