Ambassador Yitzhak Rabin left for Washington today after a week-long private visit in Israel. He had come here to mark the shloshim (30-day anniversary) of his father’s death but also reportedly had high level consolation with government officials. He told reporters at Lydda Airport prior to his departure that Israel is still waiting for clarification from Washington as to the US position on an interim Suez settlement. He said he did not know when and how the discussion on these clarifications would end.
The Israeli envoy was equally vague on his own future career. Reportedly slated to enter the Cabinet, Rabin said he would terminate his duties as Ambassador to the US next Nov., but could not say if or when he would join the Cabinet. He confirmed that Defense Minister Moshe Dayan would visit the US next month but said his Embassy has not yet been asked to arrange a schedule for him.
