Foreign Minister Abba Eban described Israel’s decision to participate in close proximity talks with Egypt under American auspices today as but a small step in the long journey toward an interim settlement to reopen the Suez Canal. Eban spoke at a reception for US Ambassador Walworth Barbour given by the Israel-US Friendship League here. Eban said the recent US-Israeli talks that led to Israel’s decision showed that it was important to maintain equality between the two nations despite the huge gap in their relative strengths.

Barbour noted that the US has accepted that conception that one cannot return to previous positions and that there is a need for modification. Barbour also remarked that the spiritual and intellectual activity in Israel bridged the gap in strength between Israel and the US.
