Acceptance of government aid for religious education will be recommended to the Rabbinical Assembly in a resolution to be presented to its 72nd annual convention to be held at the Concord Hotel beginning March 12, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today. This recommendation would call for a reversal of traditional opposition of the 1000 member Conservative rabbinical body to the acceptance of government aid to religious education. The resolution will be presented by the convention resolution committee.
The present resolution urges “financial assistance to religiously oriented schools by local, state and federal governments,” in recognition of “the changing needs of Jewish education and the vital importance of the Jewish day school for the future existence of the Jewish people.” This financial aid, the resolution states, “should be given within constitutional provisions.” Resolutions along similar lines have been defeated in the past.
