In a personal letter to Mrs. Cecil Roth, dispatched by President Nixon just before his China visit, he pays tribute to her late husband, the noted Oxford historian who was editor-in-chief of the new 16-volume Encyclopaedia Judaica. President Nixon wrote: “I was honored to receive this impres- sive study, and can well understand the pride both you and Dr. Roth’s associates have in the completion of this Jewish literary work – the culmination of many years of intensive research and editing. It is indeed a fitting tribute to Dr. Roth’s memory.”
