Towns in the Judaea district are preparing for their municipal elections to be held May 2, the first since the 1967 Six-Day War. Campaigning is already underway in Ramallah, Bethlehem and Beit Jala. In Hebron, Mayor Mohammed Ali Jaabari has called a public meeting at the town hall to decide on election procedures. Most of the town’s voters reportedly favor an uncontested list of candidates under the Mayor’s leadership though a number of individuals are campaigning for independent lists of their own.
Meanwhile, the new town councilmen elected in the Samaria district and in Jericho on March 28 are preparing to take office Wednesday morning. The West Bank military government will issue official appointments Tuesday night based on the election results.
