Premier Golda Meir received–and accepted in principle–an invitation to visit Rumania, the first Communist country to be visited by a Prime Minister of Israel, it was learned today from official sources. No date for the visit has been set. The invitation followed the visit to Israel last week of Rumania’s Deputy Foreign Minister Georgieu Macovescu.
Observers here said it was in line with Rumania’s policy of maintaining friendly relations with both Israel and the Arab countries and a further demonstration of Bucharest’s independence in foreign policy. Rumania is the only Communist bloc nation that refused to break diplomatic relations with Israel after the Six-Day War. Mrs. Meir’s visit to Bucharest at some future date was seen as balancing the recent visit of Rumania’s President Nicolae Ceausescu to Egypt. Rumania has indicated interest in assuming a mediating role in the Arab-Israel conflict.
At the same time it was learned today according to reports from Cairo, that President Anwar Sadat of Egypt may visit Moscow for talks with Soviet leaders next month, before President Nixon’s scheduled arrival there May 22.
