Dr. Kurt Waldheim, the United Nations Secretary General, described here today the mission of Gunnar V. Jarring, the UN peace emissary, as having reached “a dead end.” Dr. Jarring was given the assignment by Resolution 242 of the Security Council in 1967 which spelled out guidelines for a settlement after the Six-Day War.

Dr. Waldheim, who is here attending the Presidents Conference at the Organization for African Unity, added that the Swedish diplomat’s mission could be reactivated “only after the two sides will have announced their readiness to renew their contacts with him.” Should that happen, he added, “I will summon Dr. Jarring at once to New York and ask him to renew his efforts for a political solution to the Middle East conflict.”
