Israel’s exports to the African continent doubled during the past five years. They presently amount to $47 million annually compared to $23 million in 1967, according to the latest bulletin of the Ministry of Trade and Industry published today.
The bulletin noted that trade possibilities with African nations, particularly those of East Africa, improved considerably since 1967. Progress was also reported in trade with West Africa but legislation curbing imports by Ghana and Nigeria had an adverse effect on Israeli exports to those countries.
Dr. Y. Shachar, the Ministry official in charge of trade with Africa, Asia and Latin America, reported that Africa was a particularly good market for equipment and capital goods related to agriculture, electricity and electronics. He said the steadily rising standard of living in many African countries has opened new markets for Israeli consumer goods.
